During our stay in Rethymnon, Crete, we had the pleasure of dining at Castelo Rethymno, located in the heart of the Old Town at Radamanthios 19. This restaurant, set within the historic ruins of a Venetian castle, offered an unforgettable dining experience that beautifully blended history, ambiance, and exquisite cuisine.
Upon arriving, we were immediately captivated by the unique setting. The restaurant’s open-ceiling first floor provided a romantic atmosphere, with beautifully laid-out tables and an enchanting view of the castle’s remnants. The historical charm added a special touch to our evening.
We started our meal with the octopus sautéed in ouzo, which was cooked to perfection and full of flavor. For the main course, I chose the pork belly, which was tender and sumptuously divine. My partner opted for the chicken skewers, served with a fresh feta salad. Each dish was presented beautifully and tasted even better.
The service was impeccable, with attentive and friendly staff who made us feel welcome and well-cared for. We were delighted to receive complimentary desserts along with several shots of raki and a tiny glass of port, honoring the time-honored Cretan tradition.
One highlight of our meal was the freshly collected mussels, which were incredibly fresh and delicious. We were so impressed that we returned the next day just to have them again. The attention to detail and dedication to using fresh, high-quality ingredients were evident in every bite.
The menu also featured creative dishes like the deconstructed Moussaka and marinated Anchovies, both of which were highly recommended by fellow diners. The diverse options ensured that there was something for everyone, including vegetarians.
Overall, our visit to Castelo Rethymno was a memorable culinary journey. The combination of exceptional food, historic ambiance, and outstanding service made it a highlight of our trip. Whether you’re visiting Rethymnon for a special occasion or simply seeking a remarkable dining experience, we highly recommend Castelo Rethymno.
