Goules

During our stay in Rethymnon, Crete, we had the pleasure of dining at Goules, a delightful taverna nestled in the picturesque village of Goulediana. Known for its authentic Cretan cuisine and warm hospitality, Goules offers a dining experience that truly captures the essence of traditional Greek culture.

Goules is celebrated for its use of fresh, local ingredients, and the menu boasts a variety of dishes that cater to different tastes and dietary preferences, including vegetarian and vegan options. We began our meal with fried zucchini and smoked eggplant spread, both of which were exceptional in flavor and presentation. The zucchini was perfectly crispy, and the eggplant spread had a rich, smoky taste that paired wonderfully with the fresh bread.

For the main course, we opted for the rabbit in a sweet sauce and the rooster in tomato sauce. The rabbit was tender and flavorful, with the sweet sauce adding a unique and delicious twist. The rooster was equally impressive, cooked to perfection and bursting with traditional Cretan flavors. Both dishes exemplified the skill and passion that goes into the cooking at Goules.

We were even treated to a complimentary dessert of cherry yogurt and a glass of raki, a traditional Cretan spirit, which was a delightful way to end our meal.
