Natural History Museum

Located a stone’s throw away from the vibrant port of Heraklion, on the bustling Sofokli Venizelou street, stands the Natural History Museum of Crete, a beacon of knowledge and discovery under the auspices of the University of Crete since 1980. This museum, with its comprehensive exhibitions spanning the Zoological, Botanical, Anthropological, Paleontological-Geological, and Mineralogical fields, offers a profound exploration of Crete’s rich natural environment.

Our visit to the museum was nothing short of a deep dive into the wonders of the Cretan natural world. Each section of the museum served as a gateway to understanding the diverse flora and fauna that grace this island, offering an educational experience that both enlightens and inspires.

The Majesty of the Deinotherium Giganteum

Among the museum’s prized exhibits, the Deinotherium Giganteum stands tall — quite literally. This colossal skeleton, unearthed near Sitia, Crete, represents one of the largest animals of its kind, with a towering presence of 4.5 meters in height and 6.5 meters in length. Observing scientists at work on this exhibit provided an intriguing glimpse into the meticulous process of bringing the past to life.

An Earth-Shaking Experience

Perhaps the most exhilarating part of our visit was the interactive Seismic Table, an earthquake simulator that provides a safe yet profound experience of earthquake situations up to 6 Richter. This immersive simulation was not only a thrill but also an educational tool, offering vital information on earthquake preparedness and safety measures.

The museum also caters to its younger audience through the Stavros Niarchos Discovery Centre, specifically designed for children up to 15 years old. Dioramas, fossil collections, and a host of educational programs for children and university students enrich the museum’s offerings, making it a hub of learning for all ages.
