Our journey through Chania’s historical tapestry brought us to the heart of the Kastelli quarter, where the layers of time reveal the grandeur of ancient Kydonia. Here, beneath the modern city’s bustling life, lie the remnants of a civilization that thrived during the Roman era. The discovery of graves, a treasure trove of pottery spanning various epochs, late Minoan frescoes, and a splendid late Hellenistic mosaic all speak of Kydonia’s illustrious past.

Byzantine Echoes in Chalidon Street

Strolling down Chalidon Street, history whispered to us from the remains of ancient Byzantine walls, their stories embedded within the urban landscape. Constructed in the 1st Byzantine period and later ravaged by the Saracens in 828 A.D., these walls were resurrected and fortified in the ensuing Byzantine era, standing as silent guardians of the city’s tumultuous history.

Venetian Mastery and the Shaping of Chania

The narrative of Chania took a dramatic turn with the arrival of the Venetians, who reshaped the city’s defenses, leaving an indelible mark on its architectural heritage. The walls they erected, characterized by coursed ashlar work and harmonizing with the natural terrain, were a feat of engineering designed to withstand the test of time and invasion.

Sanmichele’s Legacy: The Fortification of Chania
