During our explorations of Crete, we stumbled upon the enchanting Amnissos Beach, located a mere 9 kilometers east of Heraklion. Nestled adjacent to the quaint village of Amnissos, this beach offered us a remarkable blend of natural beauty and historical richness.

The beach is lined with charming fish taverns, where we indulged in the freshest of seafood, each dish a testament to the culinary excellence of Crete. As we dined, the breathtaking view of the islet of Dia, a significant Minoan religious center, added a touch of mystery and allure to our meal.

But Amnissos Beach’s appeal extends beyond its natural and culinary delights. The area is steeped in history, as evidenced by archaeological excavations that have uncovered Neolithic settlements and a villa dating back to 1600 B.C., whose exquisite frescoes are now showcased in the Archaeological Museum of Heraklion. Learning that Amnissos served as the harbor of Knossos during Minoan times, from where Cretan ships set sail for the Trojan War, added a layer of historical significance to our visit.

Our exploration led us to the Cave of Eileithya, a sacred site where, according to myth, Hera gave birth to Eileithya, the goddess of childbirth.
