Upon our arrival at Vai Beach, we were instantly captivated by the sight of Europe’s unique palm tree forest, stretching its leafy arms across the golden sands. With over 5,000 palm trees, this remarkable landscape feels more akin to a tropical paradise than a European beach, offering a visual feast that defies expectation.

A Mystical Beginning:

The origin of Vai’s palm grove is steeped in legend and history. Some say it was the Arabs, during their medieval forays into Crete, who planted the first seeds of this lush oasis. Others whisper tales of Saracen pirates seeking refuge among the palms, while a third narrative credits ancient Egyptian forces with the grove’s inception, intending to support Itanos in its historic struggles. By the late 1970s, Vai had become a sanctuary for the last Hippies, drawn by its secluded beauty. However, this paradise soon faced the threat of negligence, turning into an endangered gem by the early 1980s. The beach’s transformation from a neglected camping site to a protected ecological haven speaks volumes about the commitment to preserving its unique allure. Our experience was made all the richer knowing the efforts that have gone into safeguarding Vai for generations to come.

Now under the stewardship of the Monastery Toplou, Vai has been reborn as a bastion of natural beauty and conservation. Situated 25 kilometers from Sitia and just 7 kilometers from Paleokastro, Vai is remarkably accessible. Our drive through the well-marked roads was an adventure in itself, each turn revealing breathtaking vistas of Crete’s rugged beauty. The beach’s transformation from a hidden hippie haven to a celebrated natural attraction underscores the enduring charm of Vai, attracting thousands of visitors yearly to its serene shores.
