Heraklion, Crete’s beating heart and the largest city on the island, is a vibrant metropolis that serves as the administrative, scientific, and commercial epicenter of the region. With a bustling population of about 200,000, the city is the gateway to Crete, thanks to its major port and airport. However, Heraklion’s journey through time, from a scenic city adorned with unique Venetian and Ottoman monuments to its current urban landscape, is a narrative of transformation and resilience.

A City’s Transformation

The early 1900s painted a different picture of Heraklion, one where aristocratic splendor shone through its historical Venetian and Ottoman architecture, cementing its status as one of the Mediterranean’s most historical cities. This grandeur was, unfortunately, overshadowed by the city’s rapid expansion and “modernization” efforts, which led to the replacement of beautiful old buildings with concrete blocks of flats. This shift was propelled by the urgent need to accommodate refugees following the Asia Minor Catastrophe in 1922 and a push towards urban development.

Despite these changes, Heraklion has managed to retain glimpses of its illustrious past. The city’s rich history, dating back to the Minoan era as the port of the legendary city of Knossos, continues to fascinate both visitors and locals alike. The old center of Heraklion, originally established by the Arabs in 824 and later expanded by the Venetians and the Turks, serves as a testament to the city’s enduring legacy. The name “Heraklion” itself, adopted after Crete’s liberation from the Turks in 1898, reflects a return to its roots.
