Ierapetra stands on the grounds of the ancient city Ierapytna, a place of significant historical importance due to its strategic location in the narrowest part of Crete. The city’s rich history unfolded as we explored its ancient ruins and learned about its past names – Kyrva, Kamiros, Pytna, and Ierapytna. The tales of its rivalry with Presos and Itanos added layers to our understanding of this storied city.

The Venetian Legacy and the Fortress Kalés

One of the most iconic landmarks of Ierapetra is the fortress Kalés, a testament to the city’s Venetian past. Built in the 13th century at the old harbor’s entrance, the fortress now serves as a backdrop for cultural events, adding a historical dimension to the city’s vibrant cultural scene.
